Deadly Mistakes You Make When Using a Generator

Deadly Mistakes You Make When Using a Generator

There might be a hidden enemy in your house right now. The generator that you rely on to save your life in a long-term blackout could turn out to be your killer.

No matter if it’s a solar, gas, or diesel generator, you want to make sure you are safe while it’s in use.

I have compiled a short list of dangerous mistakes people often make when using a generator, and I’ll let you know exactly what you need to do instead.

Running a Generator Inside

Carbon monoxide poisoning has killed more than 770 people in the U.S. in recent years. When you run this type of generator indoors, it releases so much carbon monoxide that it can easily kill a person in a matter of minutes.

Deadly Mistakes You Make When Using a Generator

This also applies if you use the generator in your garage; the toxic fumes will still affect your health, causing symptoms like dizziness, nausea, headaches, confusion, and even worse!

And that’s not all! Many generators can overheat if they are run in an enclosed space.

And with flammable objects around, your house can burn down faster than you can react.

Using Loud Generators

Generators are extremely loud—nothing new here!

If you use your generator to be more self-sufficient or to get over a short-term blackout, the noise might be very upsetting but not dangerous.

However, during a major blackout, when you’re one of the only people out there with backup power, you don’t want looters to hear that you have a running generator. Anyone who finds himself in a desperate situation, with no food and no heat, can turn into a burglar, even your friendly neighbors! Here’s a great solution if you want to get rid of this noise, and stay safe during a major blackout.

Forgetting About Maintenance

Deadly Mistakes You Make When Using a Generator

Unfortunately, most generators require A LOT of maintenance.

Think about your car. You don’t skip any maintenance, and you pay a lot to make sure it is safe and sound.

You should do the same when it comes to your generator.

Also, generators require oil to function properly, and just like your car, your generator needs frequent oil changes. If not changed it often enough, it will start malfunctioning.

Whether you use your generator or not, you’ll have to get it out of the box every now and then, start it, let it do its work for some time, and then pack it up again. Also, don’t forget to check the air filters so the ventilation works properly.

Leaving the Gas Inside

Fuel goes bad over time. You can store fuel for months—in special containers and in a dry place—but in most cases, it is only a matter of weeks until it starts degrading. This will not only minimize the performance of your generator’s engine but likely cause a lot of damage. You need to make sure you empty your generator, especially if you know you’re not going to use it for a long time.

While reading several articles and reviews about different types of generators and getting to know more about how they work, I came across a new alternative that seems a lot safer and that you can actually make yourself! It is called the Modular Backyard Power Plant, and it was designed by Ron Melchiore. This guy is a trained electrician who’s been living off-grid for 43 years now. His house has NEVER been connected to the grid, so he has used and tested several types of power back-ups. The Modular Backyard Power Plant is the device that Ron uses at the moment to power his entire house.

The Modular Backyard Power Plant is completely silent, so you don´t have to worry a second about looters or any other unwanted visitors. Also, this generator doesn’t need fuel or any kind of maintenance so all you need to do is build your modular power plant and run it.

You can mount this small generator on a wall, or you can make it portable and take it with you. Click here to discover how to make your own Modular Backyard Powerplant.

Space invaders in your head. The USA government relies on people, the government will protect its people. A good movie to watch is “A blast from the past”. Too many peppers have this type of mentality.

A movie reference you should watch is Schindlers List or any of the other documentaries where “the government took care of their people”. Oh, and you must be one of the demoidiots who is crazy enough to think that the government cares about you, there’s proof everywhere that the government doesn’t care about you, they care only about your money. They want you to shut up and give them everything of yours of value. You are definitely on the wrong site you wacko. You should move to Europe.

Yeah, so, good reminder to be prepared and to use your gennie sparingly and wiseley. Rotate that ethanol free gas frequently and make sure to stay on top of the maintenance. Also, build a sound suppression enclosure for your generator(s) and then, occasionally practice with them. DO NOT rely on a bunch of 16, 14, 12 gauge extension cords to pipe energy into your home. Do better than that. Good luck with what’s coming because …. it’s coming.

I had to do the best I could with mine. The generator I currently have is not really big enough to power our whole house, but will power several things within the house. Right now my system is a really heavy duty 30 amp cable running from the 4500 watt generator to a 30 amp RV plug that I installed in the side of my house. On the other side of that inside, I installed a three-way 110 splitter plug after cutting the male end off of it and wiring it into the 30 amp RV plug in the wall. We had a seven hour power outage due to heavy snow earlier in January and I set it up just to run the sump pump in our basement since the battery back up failed. Didn’t use it for anything else but it breezed along just fine with that. My neighbor has a transfer switch installed on his house. He just sets up his generator and flips the switch over so that he is drawing power from the generator and not the incoming utility. It’s big enough to run his whole home, even his air conditioner if it was a summertime outage. That’s my goal eventually.

Kind of incomplete article … suggesting no matter what kind of generator you use, solar, gas or diesel, and yet to only issues relate to gas or diesel. A big caution I would say with solar, is to keep it protected with a Faraday cage, and to use lighting sparingly …. a Faraday cage, as an EMP can destroy it … and a well lit house when the power is out, is a sure sign that you have something that others don’t have, making you a target. It’s coming folks, just think logically, and you will be ahead of the game.

I have packing blankets to cover all windows to keep light IN, and also heat.
Purchased on sale a few at a time. Should be good to go…remember that window in your shower, too!

Best to Read , Plan , Prepare for Proper Install , Proper Insulation of , Proper discharge of exaust , and proper Fuel Handling .
Remember Dont Fuel Hot , let cool down , NEVER Fuel while running , Shut off before fueling
Always disconnect Load before unplugging or moving unit
And be sure NOT to be messy with fuel or Oil
Clean up , keep clean , watch the leaks
The one thing to keep in mind , use common sense , Fuel is explosive and fumes , vapors can ignite into a very bad day
So set up a plan , write down so you know ,
Dont be Complacient , be prepared
as a expert i can tell you that after doing anything for a period of time you get comfortable and same routine , knowledge puff s up , discipline keep order
and there will be no support when all fails ,
    your on your own
    wish the best
and It is coming , kaos, calimity , take over , marshall law, control like never before

It is something we ALL need to know, if we want to survive, whether the SHTF or not. This should be taught in schools.

Turn all lights off when the sun goes down and use batteries at night if you have solar, wind etc.
Get a sun oven and cook dinner ahead of time, so only a slight warming of food is necessary.
Get sun blocker curtains, up looking blinds so no one can look in. Reinforce all doors and windows and alarm them all. Use chicken wire or some other wire to reinforce windows and electrify it if possible. Each situation is different, so think about your needs first before doing anything.

Get a dual fuel generator that also runs on propane (grill tanks) , the propane will store for a long time. Then keep several full tanks on hand. With the proper adaptors you can also run stoves, lights and heaters that are made to use propane. Just be sure to store the tanks out side in a ventilated and lockable storage unit, like the ones you see at gas stations and other places that sell the cylinders.
